Scripture. “And you, camp outside the camp seven days. Whoever has killed any being, and whoever has touched any slain, cleanse yourselves and your captives on the third day and on the seventh day” Bemiḏbar (Numbers) 31:19 (TS2009).
Reflection. Following return from a military campaign against the Miḏyanites, יהוה Elohim required Yisra’ĕl to split into two groups. The first group did not kill a being or touch a slain being during the military campaign and was permitted immediate integration into the camp of Yisra’ĕl. The second group did kill a being or touch a slain being during the military campaign and was not permitted immediate integration into the camp of Yisra’ĕl. Moreover, the second group was required to remain in set-apart isolation outside the camp of Yisra’ĕl for seven days and undergo self-cleansing prior to integration into the camp of Yisra’ĕl.
Application. Killing a being and touching a slain being, even in a military campaign commanded by יהוה Elohim, requires a period of set-apart isolation and self-cleansing for the individual before integration with the family and the community. Failure to guard the commands of יהוה Elohim results in a hasty and defiled integration that often ends in suicide, divorce, and disintegration after war.
